Chinese Oral Exam Tips for Primary School Students
Preparing for Chinese Oral
The Chinese oral exam tests two skills: Reading Aloud (朗读) and Conversation (会话). Many students struggle not because their Chinese is weak, but because they lack practice speaking.
Reading Aloud (朗读) — Tips
1. Read with expression, not speedExaminers reward natural pacing and appropriate tone. Rushing through the passage loses marks.
2. Watch for these common pronunciation errors- 翘舌音 vs 平舌音: zh/ch/sh vs z/c/s
- 前鼻音 vs 后鼻音: -n vs -ng
- 四声 (tones): especially 第二声 and 第三声
Read Chinese newspaper articles, storybooks, or textbook passages aloud. Record yourself and listen back.
Conversation (会话) — Tips
1. Listen to the full question before answeringMany students start talking before the examiner finishes. Wait, think, then respond.
2. Speak in complete sentencesInstead of one-word answers, elaborate: "我觉得运动很重要,因为运动可以让我们保持健康。"
3. Use 成语 (chengyu) naturallyOne or two well-placed idioms show vocabulary range: "持之以恒", "一举两得", "全力以赴"
4. Prepare opinions on common topics- 环保 (environment)
- 科技 (technology)
- 家庭 (family)
- 友情 (friendship)
- 学校生活 (school life)
Practice at Home
- Speak Chinese during dinner for 30 minutes daily
- Watch Chinese children's programmes (not just cartoons — news for kids)
- Ask your child to retell their day in Chinese
