Secondary 1 Adjustment: Tips for Parents and Students
The Big Transition
Moving from primary to secondary school is exciting and overwhelming. New school, new friends, new subjects, new expectations. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.
What Changes in Secondary School
| Primary School | Secondary School |
|---|---|
| 4 main subjects | 7-10 subjects |
| 1 form teacher for most subjects | Different teacher per subject |
| Guided learning | More independent study expected |
| Parents help with homework | Students expected to manage themselves |
| School ends by 1:30pm | CCA until 5-6pm, 2-3 times/week |
Academic Tips
1. Learn to take notesIn primary school, teachers write everything on the board. In secondary school, you need to listen and write simultaneously. Practice this skill during the holidays.
2. Start a homework plannerWith 7+ subjects, you will have multiple deadlines. Use a physical planner or app to track assignments.
3. Don't panic about the first examMost Sec 1 students score lower than they did in PSLE. This is normal — the content is harder and the marking is stricter.
4. Ask for help earlyIf you don't understand something in Week 2, don't wait until Week 10. Teachers respect students who ask questions.
For Parents
1. Step back graduallyYour child needs to develop independence. Check in daily but don't hover over every assignment.
2. CCA is not optionalCo-Curricular Activities teach teamwork, time management, and resilience. Support your child's CCA choice even if it is not "academic".
3. Sleep is non-negotiableWith CCA and homework, many Sec 1 students sleep at midnight. Set a firm 10:30pm lights-out rule.
4. The friendship transition is realYour child's primary school best friends may be in different schools. Be patient as they build new relationships.
